The evolution of a model of managing

Managing book cover

As promised in a footnote to the “Model of Managing” on page 48 of my new book Managing (Berrett Koehler and Pearson, 2009), I offer here all the versions of the model that I could find in my files, to give you a sense of its evolution. As you can see, it went through many iterations, starting in 1990 or earlier, before we finally settled on the final one in the book. in 2009 – thanks to my research assistant Gui Azevedo who suggested if we call them “planes” why not show them as planes. (smart guy!)

As I look the diagrams over, I realize that a number of them have the same date, which is unlikely to have been true (I’m not sure of why this is), while others have no date, although I have tried to put them in the order that seemed most likely. I may have made some small mistakes here, but probably not big ones.
